Welcome Address by Mgr Anton Teuma, Bishop of Gozo
Your Holiness,
We welcome you to our small island, small indeed but having a big heart. We welcome you to our homes and to Our Lady’s home, the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Ta’ Pinu.
A significant representation of the local Church is gathered around you this afternoon. Children, adolescents and youths are here. Families, most of them deeply involved in pastoral initiatives, as well as members of ecclesial groups and associations are here. The civil authorities are here. A good number of priests, religious and members of secular institutes who are presently exercising their ministry in Gozo and elsewhere are here.
Your Holiness, we are truly happy to have you with us today and that, like us you have come at the feet of Mary, Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu. Most of us are regulars here, more often than not with a broken heart, to pray and give thanks to our Heavenly Mother.
Help us pray so that like Mary we would be more courageous to welcome those who are fleeing from wars and famine as they seek refuge on our shores
Your Holiness, we beseech you to help us intensify our likeness with Mary, thus becoming authentic disciples of Christ in our time.

Your Holiness, help us pray so that we become more conscious of our responsibility towards the gift of creation and of the beauty which characterises our island which unfortunately is slowly but surely disappearing right in front of our unseeing eyes.
Sustain us in our prayer so that material goods be perceived as a gift to be shared with our brethren and not as an opportunity for corruption, discrimination or as a source of conflicts and division.
Your Holiness, help us pray so that we become more conscious of our responsibility towards the gift of creation and of the beauty which characterises our island which unfortunately is slowly but surely disappearing right in front of our unseeing eyes.
Your Holiness, help us pray so that we may truly become the free children of God and Christ’s brothers and sisters, and not slaves of wealth and money. Help us pray so that in our families, understanding and sharing be more prominent than profit.
Help us to pray so that our faith be not merely associated with tradition or be a socio-cultural feature, but especially in this post-pandemic period, be founded on the Word of God, the joyous celebration of the Eucharist and the witness to the love of neighbour.
Your Holiness, we ask you to accompany us with your prayer so that we priests and religious, both males and females, be not victims of the logic of worldly power-mongering, money or pleasure, but live out our vocation in the spirit of synodality close to God, our brethren and the people entrusted to our pastoral care.
We thank you, Your Holiness, for being with us at the feet of Mary to pray for this particular portion of the people of God, the Universal Church and the entire creation.

Santità,
Benvenuto a Gozo, un’isola piccola ma con un cuore grande. Benvenuto a casa nostra e di nostra Madre, il Santuario della Madonna Ta’ Pinu.
Intorno a lei stasera c’è una rappresentanza di questa Chiesa locale. È una Chiesa che ha radici salde nella storia. Ci sono i bambini, i ragazzi e i giovani. Ci sono le famiglie, tante di loro impegnate nella pastorale e membri di gruppi e associazioni ecclesiali. Ci sono i responsabili civili dell’isola. Ci sono tanti sacerdoti, religiose e religiosi e membri di istituti secolari, che esercitano il loro ministero qui’ e in altre parti del mondo.
Santità, siamo molto felici che Lei oggi sia con noi e come noi pellegrino ai piedi di Maria, la Madonna Ta’ Pinu. Tanti di noi vengono qui spesso, tante volte con il cuore infranto, a pregare e a ringraziare la nostra madre celeste.
Santità le chiediamo di aiutarci a pregare affinché diventiamo sempre più come Maria, discepoli autentici di Gesù oggi.
Ci aiuti a pregare perché come Maria possiamo avere più coraggio nell’accogliere coloro che scappando dalle guerre e dalla fame, cercano rifugio nella nostra terra. Ci aiuti a pregare affinché mai trattiamo o consideriamo questi nostri fratelli come stranieri.
Santità ci aiuti a pregare perché possiamo sentirci tutti più responsabili del dono del creato e della meravigliosa natura di quest’isola che pian piano sta scomparendo sotto i nostri occhi spesso senza accorgerci.
Ci sostenga nella preghiera perché il benessere materiale lo accogliamo come dono di Dio da condividere con i nostri fratelli e non come occasione di lucro, di discriminazione o di litigi e divisioni. Ci aiuti a pregare perché nelle nostre famiglie la serenità, la comprensione e la gioia della condivisione siano considerate più importanti del guadagno.
Ci aiuti a pregare perché la nostra fede non sia pura tradizione o vissuta come occasione socioculturale, ma specialmente dopo la pandemia, sia consapevolezza, fondata sull’ascolto della Parola di Dio, sulla celebrazione gioiosa dell’Eucarestia e sulla testimonianza dell’amore fraterno.
Santità ci accompagni nella preghiera perché noi sacerdoti, religiose e religiosi non ci lasciamo travolgere dalle logiche mondane del potere, del denaro o del piacere, ma viviamo la nostra vocazione in uno spirito sinodale, nella vicinanza a Dio, ai nostri confratelli e al popolo a noi affidato.
Grazie Santità di essere con noi stasera a pregare ai piedi di Maria, per questa porzione del popolo di Dio, per tutta la Chiesa e per tutto il Creato.
